I cover a great deal of content on security involving home defense and personal defense. One area of brutal context during a disaster or war is hand to hand combat self-defense. I have tried many types of martial arts and i have found that designated "combat martial arts" are the best. They typically combine things like Krav Maga, BJJ, wrestling, knife fighting, open hand weapon defense, and specialized striking. What I don't recommend is to take a generic karate class and think your are going to be able to defend yourself. I have seen martial artist "masters" get knocked out or choked out in a matter of seconds in the street by boxers and hardened people with life experience. Honestly the best way to test your defensive skills is to fight or spar with someone better than you with the same goal of learning combat defense. Notate your strengths and weaknesses, and believe me there will be many weaknesses. Also, MMA e.g. UFC is a little different than combat martial arts because there are rules to bound you, so you don't know how to fully dispose of a threat, especially if armed. If you are interested in combat martial arts, search for instructors who have actually trained the Secret Service. Typically these instructors do not advertise it, but with some good detective skills, you can ask around and eventually find one. At the very least, look for Krav Maga and BJJ. Then take the techniques and test how realistically they would work against someone strong and full of adrenaline.

Years ago when I was fearless and an idiot, I decided to test out my self defense abilities. At the time I was stationed in the DC area, or as they say, the DMV. I decided for a few weeks in a row to take a walk at night on Fridays and Saturdays solo to see how well I can practice handling one or two people, and escaping. In retrospect it was a terrible idea for a variety of reasons including death and legal predicaments. Though, people weren't as mentally unstable back then (except for maybe me for doing it), but still it was risky. With all the different schools available, these extreme lengths to test skills no longer have to be taken, and should not be taken.
